Since Nicander's Theriaca first appeared in 1499, many editions have been published with the most definitive having appeared in 1856. The editor of the present work, Johann Gottlob Schneider (1750-1822), also published a companion edition of the Alexipharmaca in 1792. Nicander's text is in Greek verse with the translation and commentaries in Latin prose. In addition, Schneider has included the several commentaries that pertain to the Theriaca as well as Schneider's own useful scientific notes and commentary. The index to this volume contains notations for the present volume as well as the 1792 edition of the Alexipharmaca.
