GEORGE VINER ELLIS (1812-1900) Illustrations of dissections in a series of original coloured plates the size of life, representing the dissection of the human body J. Walton 1867 First Edition 1 atlas (58 leaves of plates) : col. ill. accompanied by 1 v..: xvi, 486 p. 56 cm. (+ 1 v.: 22 cm.)

Ellis received his professional education at University College, and became M.R.C.S. in I835. As an anatomist, he was an expounder rather than a discoverer. He discovered the corrugator ani, but his chief work was in the rigorous verification and systematization of what was already known. In 1863, in conjunction with Mr. G. H. Ford, he published Illustrations of Dissections in a series of original coloured plates, the size of life, representing the dissections of the human body. The work was originally published in parts, but subsequently in two volumes imperial folio. The drawings were beautifully executed from Nature on stone by Mr. Ford from dissections made by Professor Ellis. (BMJ Obituary column, May 5, 1900)
