Gluge was a researcher and personal physician to the king of Belgium. He was educated at Berlin University and after completing post-graduate work in Paris was appointed as a professor of physiology at the University of Brussels. He became a Belgian citizen in 1846. He was among the first physicans to examine diseased tissues microscopically and often contributed to the medical journals of Germany, Belgium and France.
