Flint had been invited to present an address on medicine to the British Medical Association at its annual meeting in 1886 but died before the meeting took place. The manuscript was found among his personal papers and is printed here as it was written. Although Flint looks to the past to provide a framework for his talk, he concentrates chiefly on future developments in medicine and projected a "glorious future" (p. 36) for his profession. However he did caution that his colleagues should guard against too much specialization because it "will lead to withdrawal from the common interests of the profession" (p. 36).
