Flint had a major influence on the understanding of functional heart disease and the importance of heart murmurs. In 1862, he gave the first description of the heart murmur, still known as the Austin Flint murmur, which is a loud presystolic murmur heard best at the apex of the heart in aortic regurgitation. This work was intended to be a practical manual of physical diagnosis and is a model of clarity and brevity. It became extremely popular and reached an eighth edition in 1920.
