Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1774

JOSEPH HYRTL (1811-1894) Lehrbuch der Anatomie des Menschen. F. Ehrlich 1846 xvi, 718 pp. 23.3 cm.

Hyrtl was one of the most popular teachers in Europe and probably the most eloquent lecturer on anatomy in the nineteenth century. According to Garrison his courses were "followed by enthusiastic crowds of every race and class, even foreign nobles and consuls" (Fielding H. Garrison, An introduction to the history of medicine. 4th ed. Philadelphia, 1929. p. 463). Lehrbuch der Anatomie des Menschen was written during Hyrtl's thirty-year professorship at the University of Vienna and is one of the finest unillustrated treatises on anatomy. Its deserved popularity eventually led to twenty-two editions with translations in every major language.
