The first edition of the present work was edited by Giovanni Antonio Volpi (1686-1766), a classicist and professor of philosophy at Padua for many years. It was first published at Padua in 1718 and included the text of Fracastoro's poems, testimonials, an anonymous biography, and verse by four contemporaries and friends of Fracastoro's--Giovanni Cotta (1480-1510), Jacob Bonfadi (1509-1550), Adam Fumani (d. 1587), and Niccolò d'Arco (1479-ca. 1546). This second edition, again edited by Volpi, contains additional material including letters to Fracastoro's friends--Pietro Bembo (1470-1547), Oviedo (fl. 1540), and Paolo Ramusio (1532-1600), plus many additional poems by Fracastoro.
