The papers and articles in this volume of The works of Sir James Y. Simpson, Bart. had chiefly been published in the periodical literature. A number of them had previously appeared in his Obstetric memoirs and contributions published in 1855. This volume has been edited by Simpson's son, Sir Walter Grindlay (1843-1898), who commented in the Preface that he arranged the articles in a logical rather than chronological order. The volume is especially useful since it contains nearly all of Simpson's many writings on anesthesia.
