The contents of these two volumes, edited by Sir William Overend Priestley (1829-1900) and Horatio Robinson Storer (1830-1922), consist of Simpson's writings on obstetrics through April 1855. Although many of the papers had previously been published in European medical journals, Simpson had written a number of entirely new contributions for this publication. The editors had Simpson's full cooperation and embarked on the project because they felt "that some more tangible and permanent form should be given to his works" (p. [ix]). The work is arranged by subject and includes his many papers on the use of anesthesia in childbirth. Priestly was an eminent British gynecologist who was Simpson's assistant before becoming professor of obstetric medicine at King's College in London. A graduate of Harvard Medical School, Storer spent two years studying in Europe and also served as an assistant to Simpson. He returned to Boston to become a successful gynecologist in the Boston area.
