Simpson presented his initial experiences with the administration of chloroform during childbirth to the Medico-Chirurgical Society of Edinburgh on December 1, 1847. In addition to discussing the ethical question of whether anesthetics should be used to ease the burden of labor, he presented twelve cases in which he had used chloroform with satisfactory results. His address was published at Edinburgh soon thereafter and it has here been reprinted at Boston with an appendix containing testimonial letters from prominent physicians and dentists in the Boston area.
