This first work on morbidity and mortality published by the Medical Department of the United States Army was prepared by Forry, an Army surgeon, under the direction of the Surgeon General, Thomas Lawson (1795-1861). The effects of climate, topography, sanitation, and other factors affecting the well-being of the soldier are investigated and statistically analyzed. In performing the study, Forry reviewed the records of the Surgeon General and Adjutant General for the period from 1819 to 1839.
