Guy studied at Cambridge, Guy's Hospital, and also spent two years at Heidelberg and Paris before taking his medical degree in 1837. He was associated with London's King's College for forty years, serving as professor of forensic medicine and later as professor of hygiene. He was physician to King's College Hospital and also served ten years as dean of the medical school. Guy was a strong supporter of public health reform and had an avid interest in medical statistics. He edited the Statistical Society's journal for several years and also served as their president from 1873 to 1875. Guy first published the present work at London in 1844 and it was the standard work on the subject for many years. This first American edition was edited by Charles Alfred Lee (1801-1872), a physician who taught at a number of medical schools in the northeastern United States. Lee adapted the work to the needs of the American medical and legal professions and added 200 pages of additional material.
