Altogether, the histological discoveries of Henle take rank with the anatomical discoveries of Vesalius (Fielding H. Garrison, An introduction to the history of medicine. 4th ed. Philadelphia, 1929. p. 458). In this volume Henle discusses the cardiovascular system. His cardiovascular researches resulted in the eponymic elastic membrane, fenestrated membrane, and fissure. The elastic membrane is a fenestrated layer between the outer and middle tunics of certain arteries, the fenestrated membrane is a subendothelial fibroelastic fenestrated layer in the intima of an artery, and the fissures are spaces between the muscular fibers of the heart that are filled with connective tissue.
