Early in his career, Wilson was elected a member of the Royal Society, became president of the Royal College of Surgeons, and was knighted in 1881. He used his great wealth to benefit the poor and extended his philanthropy to cultural projects as well as to medicine. He earned considerable notoriety when he brought the obelisk known as Cleopatra's Needle from Egypt to England. The first American edition of this work (see No. 1729) was very successful and well received. Goddard carefully reviewed the first edition and, in this second edition, added new material wherever necessary to reflect the latest advances in scientific investigation. He also added a number of new illustrations to assist the student's understanding of the anatomy of the perineum and hernia.
