Darwin began work on this book in January 1871, only two days after finishing the proofs of The descent of man. In the work he discussed the physiological and psychological principles of the way in which emotions were expressed in man and animals. He concluded "That the chief expressive actions, exhibited by man and by the lower animals, are now innate or inherited. . . ." (p. 351).
