Darwin's book was an instant success in England and the first run of 1,250 copies was sold on the day of publication. A second edition of 3,000 copies was published on January 7, 1860 and it also sold very quickly. Very soon thereafter the book was published in the United States in a printing of 2,500 copies. The present work was among the early editions to appear in the United States.
