A German anatomist, Bock graduated from the University of Leipzig in 1831, after which he served as a hospital physician for the Polish and Russian armies during the Polish-Russian War until 1832. He was a private lecturer at Leipzig and began presiding over autopsies in 1837. In 1839 he was appointed professor of pathological anatomy and in 1850 became head of the clinical department. He published books and essays on public health in his later career which earned him a popular audience.
