BENEDICT AUGUSTE MOREL (1809-1873) Études cliniques. Traité théorique et pratique des maladies mentales. Grimblot et veuve Raybois 1852-1853 Vol. I: [4] xviii, 474 [2] pp., [14] plates; Vol. II: [4] 600 pp., [10] plates, 3 fold. tables. 20.2 cm.

Born in Vienna of French parents, Morel studied medicine at Paris where he was a close friend of Bernard (see No. 1792 ff.). He became assistant to Jean Pierre Falret (1794-1870) at the Salpêtrière in 1841 and in 1843 made a two year trip through Europe to study lunatic asylums. In 1848 he became director of the asylum at Maréville. In 1856 he returned to Paris to become director at L'Asile des aliénés de Saint-Yon. Although best known for his work in psychiatry, he was also first to describe Morel's ear, in which the folds of the ear are partially obliterated resulting in a large, smooth ear with a thin edge. In this, one of Morel's earliest works, he studies in detail the nature, treatment, classification, and legal aspects of mental diseases.
