Although Ray wrote only three books, he made many contributions to the journals of his day. This, his last published work, contains twenty-two papers "that, since their first appearance, the subjects they discuss have lost none of their original interest. . . ." (Preface [iii]). Two of the papers appeared here for the first time, one was extensively rewritten based on new information, and the remainder were slightly edited.
