No. 40 of what was undoubtedly a small luxury edition, produced under the patronage of the king of Belgium. The twenty lithographed plates, printed on India paper, are highly artistic illustration of Burggraeve’s employment of cotton-wool with a starch bandage for fractures, a method in which he pioneered. One of the leading figures in Belgian medicine, Burggraeve is perhaps best known for his study of his compatriot Vesalius.
