Beginning his career as a dentist, Bostwick began studying medicine in 1830 eventually earning his degree from the New York College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1837 and setting up a practice. He spent the latter part of his career as a prison physician. He worked on several medical publications, this work is one of his solo publications.
