The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1678

SAMUEL DAVID GROSS (1805-1884) The anatomy, physiology, and diseases of the bones and joints. John Grigg 1830 v, 389 [3] pp. 21.9 cm.

Gross, one of the best-known surgeons and teachers of his day, was one of the founders of the American Medical Association and of the American Surgical Society. He taught for a number of years at the Louisville Medical Institute before returning to the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia as professor of surgery. Gross studied medicine at the Jefferson Medical College and, after his graduation in 1828, established a private practice in Philadelphia. In order to fill the time while developing his practice, he translated a number of French and German medical works into English and also published the present work. He prepared it because little information on the subject was readily available in the American medical press and "to furnish the student with a plain, concise, and practical digest of the present state of the science, embracing an account of the most important facts and observations" (Preface, p. [iii]).
