Stokes confirmed his importance as a clinician in this work on the heart. His description of fatty degeneration of the heart has hardly been improved upon. He also describes the condition of slow pulse accompanied by cerebral attacks of syncope, since known as the Stokes-Adams syndrome, and he first identified the weak semi-beats of the heart between regular contractions as contractions of the auricles.
