The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1655

EDWARD RIGBY (1804-1860) On the constitutional treatment of female diseases. Blanchard and Lea 1857 xv [1] [13]-256, 12 pp. 19.2 cm.

Rigby was regarded as the leading obstetrician in London during his day and he edited the second edition of William Hunter's (see No. 942) Anatomia uteri humani gravidi (London, 1843). After completing his medical degree at Edinburgh, he spent four years at Berlin and Heidelberg doing special work in midwifery. After returning to London Rigby served as physician to the Westminster Lying-In Hospital, lectured on midwifery at St. Thomas' and St. Bartholomew's Hospitals, and was the first president of the Obstetrical Society. He intended this work on gynecological diseases to be strictly practical and addressed it to experienced practitioners who treated female patients but who did not have time to give special attention to the study of female diseases.
