ELISHA BARTLETT (1804-1855) The history, diagnosis, and treatment of typhoid and of typhus fever. Lea and Blanchard 1842 xvi, 393 pp. 22.8 cm.
Bartlett, a native of Rhode Island, was graduated from the medical department of Brown University in 1826 and spent the next few years in France where he was greatly influenced by Louis (see No. 1438 ff.) and his practical approach to medicine. Bartlett returned to the United States and settled in Lowell, Massachusetts. Although he practiced there for many years, Bartlett held professional chairs at various times in nine different institutions, including Dartmouth College, Transylvania University, University of Maryland, Vermont Medical College, University of Louisville, and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New York. Bartlett was also an active writer, editor, and contributor to the medical periodicals of his day. The present work, on typhoid and typhus fever, is his most important contribution to the literature. According to Osler (see No. 2120 ff.), "This work immediately placed Bartlett in the front rank of American physicians of the day. It had a powerful influence on the profession of the country" (Sir William Osler, An Alabama student and other biographical essays. New York, 1908. p. 132).
