Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1642

MARTIN GAY (1803-1850). A statement of the claims of Charles T. Jackson, M.D. to the discovery of the applicability of sulphuric ether to the prevention of pain in surgical operations. Boston: Printed by David Clapp, 1847. 29 [3] xviii pp; 22.9 cm.

The present pamphlet was prepared by Gay, a Boston physician, in support of Charles Thomas Jackson's (see No. 1675) claim to priority over Morton (see No. 1873) for the discovery of sulphuric ether as a general anesthetic. Gay's account is convincing and is bolstered by six sworn letters of testimony supporting Jackson. Gay also includes a letter from Jackson recounting the experiments which led to his discovery.
