Bierkowski studied medicine in Jena, Berlin and Leipzig before returning to his homeland in Poland. He formed the Krakow surgical clinic in 1831 where he worked for the rest of his life lecturing on surgery, venereal disease, ophthalmology and obstetrics. He also established Annals of Surgery, the first medical journal published in Krakow. The present work is his second anatomical atlas.
