Müller's Handbuch is the great classic of the nineteenth century in the field of physiology. Here he summarizes the advances of the preceding decades and successfully integrates the contributions of other fields, notably comparative chemistry, physics, and psychology. It is largely through this work that physiology emerged as a medical discipline under Müller's leadership.
