This first American edition of Hope's Principles and illustrations of morbid anatomy (see No. 1629) was edited by Leonidas M. Lawson (1812-1864), a professor of anatomy and physiology at Transylvania University. It was Lawson's intent to provide an accurate illustrated manual of pathological anatomy at a low price so that a book of great value could be made widely available. He also stated that "The great value of Dr. Hope's work consists especially in the fidelity of his drawings. He assures us the drawings were always completed within a few hours after the specimen was taken from the body so that any changes in color, from decomposition or exposure to the atmosphere, were avoided, and a faithful representation secured" (Preface to the First American Edition).
