For more information on this author or work, see number: 1621

The first American edition of Ricord's important contribution to man's knowledge of the nature of venereal disease was published in 1842. It was so well received that it was already in this fifth edition only nine years later. An English translation had appeared in London in 1841 but the many cases and other material omitted from the book prompted the American publisher, P. Gordon, to have a new translation made the following year. The translator, Augustus Sidney Doane (see No. 1705), became associated with the book when he translated the second edition in 1844.
