Readers of the Select medical library had been promised a translation of Ricord's Traité pratique des maladies vénériennes but the translator was unable to complete the project. The publishers then turned to the Edinburgh medical and surgical journal "from different numbers of which we have derived the following Treatise. . . ." (Editor's preface, p. [3]). The latter portion of the book on chancre was originally published by Ricord in the Bulletin général de thérapeutique médicale et chirurgicale and later translated for the Edinburgh medical and surgical journal.
