WILLARD PARKER [Portrait collection. Twenty-two lithographed portraits of mostly French physicians and surgeons by various artists]. [n.d.] 22 plates (ports.). 47 cm.

Twenty-two lithographed portraits of mostly French physicians and surgeons, by various artists, the majority originating from the Paris publishing house of Rosselin, c. 1850. 18 of the 22 portraits are present in especially fine impressions on Japanese paper. Represented in the collection are Pare, Cuvier, Corvisart, Laennec, Magendie, Bichat, Larrey, Rayer, Orfila, Richerand, Andral, Dubois, Chassaignac, Louis, Boyer, Jobert de Lamballe, H., Larrey, Velpau, Ricord, and Maissonneuve, and in addition, Harvey and J.G. Zimmermann. Most of the portraits carry below a facsimile of the of the subject’s signature; there is no text. The collection may have been assembled by, and bound for, Dr. Willard Parker (1800-1884), the prominent New York surgeon and teacher, whose penciled signature appears on end-paper. His library of over 4,000 volumes was presented to the library of the Medical Society of the County of Kings by his son in 1906. All portraits carry the library’s stamp on verso.
