Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1618

DAVID MEREDITH REESE (1800-1861) Medical lexicon of modern terminology. H. G. Langley 1845 viii, 240 pp. 11.4 cm.

Reese received his medical education at the University of Maryland where he graduated in 1819. He began practice in Baltimore where he was soon appointed professor of the institutes of medicine and surgery and medical jurisprudence at Washington University. He later held professorships at the Albany Medical College in New York and the Castleton Medical College in Vermont. He then moved to New York where he served as resident physician to the Bellevue Hospital and then returned to private practice. Reese was a highly productive medical author and was also active in the affairs of the American Medical Association. This small pocket-size medical dictionary was intended for medical students and new practitioners. Reese's aim was simplicity, brevity, and accuracy and, in keeping with his intention, the entries are extremely short ranging from one to twenty words.
