Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1617

VALENTINE FLOOD (1800-1847) The surgical anatomy of the arteries, and descriptive anatomy of the heart. Printed for S. Highley; and Fannin & Co., Dublin 1839 xci, 237 [3] pp., fold. col. plate (front.), illus. 17.9 cm.

Flood, educated at Trinity College, was a popular Dublin lecturer on anatomy whose classes at the Richmond Hospital attracted large number of students. Unusual for its time because it deals with the surgical anatomy of the organs of circulation, this book accurately describes those structures, emphasizes the importance of the anatomical variations to the surgeon, and reviews the operative technique of several contemporary surgeons. The text includes illustrative woodcuts and a colored frontispiece depicting a suboccipital dissection by the author which shows the floor of the skull, upper cervical vertebrae, vertebral arteries, and several cervical and lower cranial nerves.

Gift of John Martin, M.D.
