Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1614

JOHN MAYNE (fl. 1800) A dispensatory and therapeutical remembrancer. Lea and Blanchard 1848 vi [6] [13]-329 [35] pp. 19.4 cm.

Mayne, an Edinburgh physician, has here prepared an unabridged formulary of the London, Edinburgh, and Dublin pharmacopoeias which he felt would be of great use to the practitioner as a ready reference source of drug information. The book is arranged by therapeutic classification and each entry contains the drug's English and Latin names, method of preparation, and uses. A series of prescriptions are included at the bottom of each page as examples of how the drug may be used therapeutically. This American edition was edited by Robert Eglesfeld Griffith (1798-1850), of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, who revised the book to include the formulae of the U.S. Pharmacopoeia.
