Dunglison published the first edition of General therapeutics in 1836 and, when asked to prepare this second edition, decided to include a materia medica with it because the two subjects were usually associated in medical schools. His goal in this edition was "to prepare a work on General Therapeutics and Materia Medica, which may aid the medical student in acquiring the main results of modern observation and reflection; and, at the same time, be to the medical practitioner a trustworthy book of reference" (Preface, p. iv-v).
