For more information on this author or work, see number: 1595

The present work originated in the applications, made to the Author for his opinions, as to the best method of study for one about to enter upon professional life, as well as for one engaged in its prosecution (Preface, p. viii). Dunglison recommends a course of study to be followed before a student enters medical school, discusses the medical school curriculum and graduation requirements, emphasizes the importance of continuing education after graduation, and provides guidelines for professional behavior and deportment. Nearly nine pages are devoted to a glossary of Latin terms which will assist the student in writing prescriptions. Two useful appendices include a 195 item annotated bibliography of key medical texts and a directory of 23 medical schools in the United States that conferred degrees.
