In the present treatise, Wood has assembled the extensive knowledge he accumulated during over thirty years of teaching materia medica, the results of research and investigation, and the practical experience he gained in treating patients. In the Preface he stated that "This is probably the last professional Treatise of the author; as, with its publication, he will have exhausted what he has had to communicate in those departments of medicine to which he has given a special attention. . . ." The work proved so popular that 5,000 copies were sold and Wood was asked to produce this new edition before departing on a voyage to Europe.
