In explaining why he wrote this comprehensive work, Wood commented that he had "no other excuse to offer than this; that he has written in obedience to impulses which he could not well resist" (Preface, p. [v]). The first edition was published at Philadelphia in 1847 and it became popular as a textbook in the United States as well as England and Scotland.
