Andral received his medical degree at Paris in 1821 and three years later qualified as professor agrégé on the Faculté de Médecine. In 1828 he became professor of hygiene and in 1839 succeeded Broussais (see No. 1265 ff.) as chair of general pathology and therapeutics, a position he held with great success for the next twenty-seven years. Only a year after assuming the professorship of hygiene, Andral published this comprehensive treatise on pathological anatomy. He commented that his intention was not to provide a complete work on the subject but only "c'est le simple exposé de la méthode avec laquelle j'ai étudié l'anatomie pathologique dans le but de déterminer ses rapports avec la médecine pratique" (p. viii).
