Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1577

27.3 cm.

Through careful microscopic studies of the brain, Schroeder van der Kolk erroneously concluded that the seat of epilepsy was in the medulla. Impressed with its many reflex functions, he postulated "an exalted sensibility and excitability" of the ganglia of that region to be the cause of the disease. His work on the anatomy and physiology of the medulla provided the basis for Schroeder van der Kolk's later work on epilepsy. This is a presentation copy bearing Schroeder van der Kolk's signature.
