Both Cazenave and Schedel were pupils of the eminent Laurent Théodore Biett (1781-1840), and this authoritative text is based largely on his clinical lectures. By 1862, four French, three English, and two German editions had been published. Cazenave later founded the first journal devoted to dermatology, Annales des maladies de la peau et de la syphilis.
