For more information on this author or work, see number: 1513

Written late in the author's career, this work explores the contributions of Galen, Harvey, Colombo, Cesalpino and others to the advancement of knowledge concerning circulation of the blood. Flourens believed that Servetus (see No. 274) described the pulmonary circulation in his Christianismi restitutio (1553) before Colombo or Cesalpino. Servetus' work was largely theological and Flourens explains how logical it was for a physiological subject like the circulation to appear in a religious tract. The final chapter of the book contains the physiological section of Servetus' book in the original Latin to allow the reader full access to Servetus' ideas and commentary.
