This monograph is based on a series of lectures given by Flourens at the Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle at Paris in 1836. Flourens points out that the anatomy and physiology of animal life can no longer be separated and functional anatomy should be discussed instead. He provides in detail the normal anatomy of the reproductive organs of the human male and female, together with that of certain lower mammals. The origin and physiology of the ovum and impregnation are clearly explained, as is the growth of the early embryo to the term fetus. Organogenesis in man and certain lower animals is also explained. Ten lithographs, nine of which are exquisitely hand-colored, demonstrate the human female genitalia, human fetal circulation, and embryonic development in man and certain other species, including the turtle and snake.
