In this book Conolly summarizes the use of mechanical restraints in mental asylums and discusses the progress made in asylums where their use had been abandoned. Conolly's efforts on behalf of the non-restraint system marked the successful conclusion of a movement that began with Pinel. As a result, an entirely new approach to insanity was initiated throughout the civilized world.
