Professor of clinical surgery at London's University College, Liston's brilliant knowledge of anatomy, coupled with the speed and dexterity of his scalpel, made him one of the finest surgeons of his day. He introduced a number of important surgical innovations, most notably in the area of dislocation reduction, amputation, and plastic surgery. Liston was the first European to use the newly discovered ether in surgery, employing it in an amputation of the thigh in 1846. Elements of surgery, first published in 1831, is one of Liston's most important works; it went through numerous editions.
