HEINRICH RATHKE (1793-1860) Entwickelungsgeschichte der Wirbelthiere. W. Engelmann 1861 viii, 201 pp., illus. 22.4 cm.
Rathke is sometimes ranked with Baer (see No. 1493) as a pioneer in vertebrate embryology. His discovery, in birds and mammals, of structures homologous to gill slits offered further evidence of ontogenic similarity among vertebrates. His name is perpetuated in the term Rathke's pouch, a diverticulum which develops from the embryonic buccal cavity to become the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland. This highly praised work in comparative embryology was published posthumously by Kölliker (see No. 1848) at the request of Rathke's son.
