Heirs of Hippocrates

The Development of Medicine in a Catalogue of Historic Books

Complete Record - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1492

CHARLES DELUCENA MEIGS (1792-1869) A treatise on acute and chronic diseases of the neck of the uterus. Blanchard and Lea 1854 iv, 17-116 pp., 22 plates (part col.). 23 cm.

For more information on this author or work, see number: 1487

Meigs was, in his time, one of America's most respected obstetricians and gynecologists and did much to establish norms of practice through his varied works. On the other hand, he was one of the most vocal opponents of Oliver Wendell Holmes' warnings on the contagiousness of puerperal fever (see No. 1744). This work is rather unusual in that it contains twenty-two colored lithographs, a number not often seen in American texts of this era. Meigs wrote the work while professor of midwifery at Jefferson Medical College.
