Dedicating this work to Daniel Drake (see No. 1406 ff.), Meigs noted in the dedicatory letter that the book was primarily intended for the student. He included some elements of his former treatise on the subject (see No. 1487). Meigs was firmly against the use of anesthetics during labor and delivery and remarked that "having carefully studied the reports upon etherization and chloroformization, whether those of this country or those produced in Europe, I remain as yet unconvinced--either of the necessity for the method, or of its popularity" (p. 316). In addition to his arguments against anesthetics, Meigs includes a letter from Simpson (see No. 1766) on the efficacy, preparation, and administration of chloroform as well as Meigs' long and unfavorable reply.
