The first edition of Meigs' work (see No. 1487) was well received and was adopted as a textbook in many medical schools. In the Preface Meigs commented that "the work has been exhausted from the book-shelves, and I have been invited by the bookseller and publisher to prepare a second edition" (p. [5]). The size of the book was increased, larger type was used, and a number of additional plates added to increase its usefulness. This copy was in the library of Robert Bennett Bean (1874-1944) for many years and was given to William B. Bean by his mother in 1942. Robert B. Bean was a student and associate of Osler's at Johns Hopkins and was later professor of anatomy at the University of Virginia.
